So, confession— like most people who came across a story talking about a grown man “marrying” a toddler, my first thought was, ‘Is this sick man outside of his mind?!’ WHO would do such a thing?!
But upon delving a little further, I found out I couldn’t have been more wrong.
You see, this is Poppy-Mai, the bride-to-be…Stay with me here.
Poppy-Mai was born a beautiful, bright-eyed, healthy baby girl.
But 15 months later, the once cheery little tot became cranky and fussy. Her mom, Sammi Barnard, knew something was wrong—but she didn’t know just how wrong.
Doctors initially thought the toddler had Wilms, which is a type of kidney cancer, but it turns out, her diagnosis was much worse. Poppy-Mai had an aggressive cancer known as a malignant rhabdoid tumor, and doctors gave her just 2 days to live, according to a report by the UK Daily Mail.
Her dad, 31-year-old Andy Barnard, was gone on an assignment with Britain’s Royal Air Force when he got the news. Sammi notified her husband immediately, and his boss had him flown to the UK right away to be with his ailing daughter who was recently transferred to Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge.
