So, in order for any sort of clarity to come in communication, one must communicate, correct? That’s exactly right. So, talk. Talk to your toddler. Well, first thing’s first, maintain your composure as this mini episode escalates. You joining in on the party will not help the situation. However, it is important to let your little one know that their behavior isn’t quite acceptable and in fact, you will not respond to them while they are acting like this. Keep your word brief and your actions and emotions intact.

Control Your Emotions

Once again, control your emotions. This not only mean refrain from raising your voice, but this also means avoiding the maternal instinct to snap your little one into submission. What do I mean?

There can be no, “I’m sorry mommy’s baby is upset” or “oh no, why are you so angry”, complete with “mommy” voice.

This only works as a reinforcement of the behavior in the near future. Be firm, and state that you will not respond until they have calmed down.

Sounds simple enough? Of course, but do not underestimate the power of simplicity. A toddler tantrum is in response to not receiving some sort of attention they were seeking.  Using the above brings things back into submission, and a shot at giving attention to wherever is needed. Even if your toddler still does not receive whatever it is they may have been asking for you have supplied the most important, your attention.
